LRBT's 60 millionth patient - Restoring hope & sight in Pakistan
Maqbool Ahmed, a 42-year-old resident of Landhi, Karachi, has become the landmark 60 millionth patient treated by LRBT, Pakistan’s largest network of free eye hospitals. This remarkable milestone not only underscores the life-changing work of LRBT but also highlights their ongoing mission to combat curable blindness and restore sight to millions across Pakistan.
Maqbool Ahmed’s life has been shaped by adversity from an early age. At just 12 years old, he faced the heartbreaking loss of both parents, thrusting the responsibility of raising his younger siblings onto his shoulders. In the midst of this already difficult journey, another challenge arose—severe eye allergies that gradually led to blurred vision and corneal opacity in both eyes, further complicating his life.
As Maqbool’s eyesight worsened, society’s cruelty grew. In a country where visual impairment often leads to social exclusion, he was harshly labeled “blind” by relatives, neighbors, and even friends. People rejected him, denied him job opportunities, and treated him like a burden. His confidence shattered, and he began to avoid leaving the house, fearing the humiliation of bumping into someone.

Yet, despite his vision loss, his wife stood by him. She chose to marry him, supported him and encouraged him to seek treatment. Her strength became his lifeline.
It was then that Maqbool learned about LRBT Karachi Korangi Hospital, one of Pakistan’s leading free eye care hospitals. At LRBT, he received medical treatment and was registered for a corneal transplant in Karachi. Thanks to the generosity of a donor, Maqbool underwent the life-changing surgery.
The day his bandages were removed remains unforgettable. Tears rolled down his face as light returned to his world. For the first time, he saw the clear faces of his wife and daughter, faces he had only known in blurred outlines. He said with gratitude: I have lived my life in darkness, unable to recognize even the faces of my loved ones. Today, for the first time, I see them clearly. I have no words to thank LRBT for giving me back the gift of sight.”
From being called “useless” to becoming independent again, Maqbool’s life has completely transformed. Today, he works as a master tailor in a garment company while managing personal work on the side. With his income, he supports his family, pays his monthly expenses, and lives with dignity.
Maqbool’s story is not just about restoring vision in Pakistan, it is about restoring dignity, hope, and dreams. It reflects the impact of LRBT’s nationwide network of free eye hospitals, where millions like him receive free treatment, surgeries, and transplants.
As the 60 millionth patient of LRBT, Maqbool stands as a symbol of what is possible when compassion meets action. His journey proves that sight is more than just vision—it is freedom, opportunity, and life itself.
